Because do not dissolve in water, can not be used as anesthesia, analgesic and antipruritic drugs, usually made of powder or cream shaped, clinically used to treat wounds, ulcers, burns, skin abrasions and hemorrhoids.
Benzocaine is also called parathesin, Sinai sisin. Separated from water is colorless or white orthorhombic crystals or crystalline powder, precipitated from ether to square crystal. No smell. Bitter. Relative molecular mass 165.19. Melting point 92 degrees Celsius. The boiling point of 310 DEG C, 183 to 184 C (1.87 x 103Pa). Insoluble in water, soluble in ethanol, ether and chloroform, also soluble in almond oil, olive oil and dilute acid. Stable in the air.
From p-nitrotoluene, in sulfuric acid, using sodium dichromate oxidation, formation of p-nitrobenzoic acid, esterification with ethanol, after the completion of the reaction, separation, the ethyl p-nitrobenzoate in acetic acid solution, with iron powder in 85 ~ 95 DEG C reduction, available benzocain crude. After the separation, water washing, and then recrystallization in ethanol.
