What is citrus aurantium extract?

Citrus aurantium, also known as BitterOrange or Seville Orange, is a plant used for medicinal purposes in China, South America, India and North America. The leaves, flowers, dried fruit anddried peel are all used for aiding stomach ailments, constipation andsupporting the nervous system. Currently, citrus aurantium is used in manyweight loss products.

Citrus aurantium is the Latin or medicalterm for a spiny, evergreen citrus tree that produces a fruit commonly referredto as bitter orange. The term may refer to the fruit itself or the dietarysupplement that's derived from the fruit's extract. People also refer to bitterorange as bigarade orange, Seville orange or sour orange. The ancient Chineseare often cited as the earliest users of bitter orange; using it forgastrointestinal ailments, they called the fruit Zhi shi.

Benefits of taking Citrus Aurantium extract:

In recent years, citrus Aurantium hasbecome a popular ingredient in various weight loss supplements because ofsynephrine. Citrus aurantium contains the alkaloid synephrine, which is acentral nervous system stimulant and is used as a thermogenic fat burner.

1) As a dietary supplement designed to support calorie burning (thermogenesis) and resulting weight loss.

2) It also helps to clean the blood and has been reported to dissolve kidney stones.

3) Synephrine is a stimulant, similar to caffeine and ephedrine, it is thought to have similar effects in terms of providing an energy boost, suppressing appetite and increasing metabolic rate and caloric expenditure. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), zhi shi is used to help stimulate the Qi (energy force). Although synephrine and several other compounds found in zhi shi are structurally similar to ephedrine and are known to act as stimulants (via adrenergic activity), zhi shi does not appear to have the same negative central nervous effects of ma huang.
